For the UK Industrial Vision Association, 2009 is the year for changing from gathering three dimensional measurements comming out of two dimensional representations, to working directly over three dimensional digitized models.

"Two 2009 greetings cards received at the start of this year point the way to a future in which the digital representation may be three dimensional in more and more cases. One, a card, showed the principal of using laser scanner to record the details of the frontage of Paris street of great architectural merit. The other, sent in electronic form, had a colour-coded representation of a laser scan of a handwritten message, where the resolution was sufficient to show the height of the ink on the paper! This shows the enormous range of sizes that 3D image capture capabilities can now handle."
